We built Katachi-Go because we love colorful shape puzzles. But if you have spent enough time with classic connected-ball games like Kanoodle, you start to notice where that puzzle format breaks down.
Instead of just cloning a popular game, we looked at the biggest pain points of Kanoodle-style games and engineered a better experience. Here are five common frustrations with traditional shape puzzles, and how Katachi-Go solves them.
1. Accidental Solutions
The Frustration: Classic Kanoodle is a packing puzzle. Often, there is more than one way to cram the pieces into the remaining space. You aren't necessarily finding the answer; you are just placing pieces until a layout happens to work. Your solution to the puzzle could be one of many possible solutions.
The Fix: Mathematical exclusivity. Katachi-Go is built on strict logic. Clues scattered across the 5x11 grid dictate the placement of our 12 distinct polyominoes. Because of this clue system, every single puzzle has exactly one correct solution.
2. The Trial-and-Error Trap
The Frustration: In traditional Kanoodle-style games, you get zero feedback while solving. You guess, build yourself into a corner, realize you are stuck, and have to tear everything out to start over.
The Fix: Pure deduction. Every other shape puzzle makes you guess; this one gives you clues, making Katachi-Go like a 3D, full-color Sudoku. You reason your way to the answer step by step rather than guessing until you find a solution.
3. Tiny, Easily Lost Pieces
The Frustration: Standard travel puzzles are pocket-sized. The pieces are notoriously easy to drop, lose under the couch, or misplace entirely.
The Fix: Giant scale. We ditched the tiny pieces. Katachi-Go is oversized and enjoyably tactile. The giant pieces are easy to handle, easy to see from across the table, and very hard to lose.
4. The Booklet Runs Out
The Frustration: Mass-market games come with a finite paper booklet. Once you solve the included challenges, the game is effectively over and gets pushed to the back of the closet.
